Our Story
Long before it became part of Gallen Hospitality, An Chúirt Hotel had a rich history of its own. The hotel was originally established in the 1830s by George Hill, a Scottish landowner who was deeply connected to the Gweedore area. Hill, dedicated much of his life to the development of Gweedore. He built An Chúirt as a hunting lodge and guesthouse, intended to accommodate visitors to this wild and rugged part of Donegal. Hill’s vision was not only to create a place of rest, but also to promote Gweedore as a destination for visitors and scholars interested in the Irish language and culture.
Over the years, An Chúirt became more than just a lodge. It grew into a hub of community life, welcoming travelers, tourists, and dignitaries alike. Its location at the foot of Errigal and on the shores of Dunlewey Lake made it one of the most scenic spots in Ireland, giving it a reputation for hospitality, natural beauty, and cultural significance.
In the mid-20th century, the building’s role changed dramatically when it was taken over by the State and converted into a courthouse. For many years it served as the centre of justice for the wider Gweedore area, dealing with local disputes, hearings, and civic matters. It was during this time that the building became commonly known as An Chúirt – “The Court.” This phase in its history gave the site a new civic identity, though over time the courthouse closed and the building eventually fell into disrepair.
The property was later purchased by the Doherty family, who undertook significant work to redevelop the site. In 2001, the historic location once again welcomed visitors to the Gaeltacht. Under their ownership, An Chúirt became a well-known venue for both locals and tourists, laying important groundwork for its future.
The next chapter began in 2021, when Tommy and Bridget Gallen and their family purchased An Chúirt, securing its future as part of their growing hospitality group. Today, An Chúirt, together with its sister hotels the Villa Rose and Jackson’s Hotel in Ballybofey, as well as Gallens Bar, is proudly operated by the Gallen Family under the banner of Gallen Hospitality.
With deep respect for the past and a clear vision for the future, the Gallens are committed to ensuring that An Chúirt remains a place where history, culture, and community come together in the heart of the Donegal Gaeltacht.
